Logic of the Living

“When there’s no more room in hell, then the dead will walk the earth”
Sage advice, a warning to live proper lives, or face the wrath of hell and the undead. So one’s soul does not return to the land of the living to feast upon them. However, what happens, and the time will come soon, when there’s no more room on earth?

People are overpopulating the planet; plausible sustainability is becoming a larger issue every day as more humans are being born than are dying. That is simply viewed as progress, though. Population growth means that humanity isn’t dying off, we’re thriving.

In this possible world, however, capacity has been reached and surpassed. The core of the story though, begins where we end, with death. It all started logically, you create ashes of your loved ones; spread them where they may have enjoyed in life, perhaps a lovely spot on the mantle, no burial plot. Then, diamonds: wear your loved ones in small pieces of jewelry. Even in your world, this is possible; the cremated carbon remains of your loved ones are subjected to great pressure and heat, and the entire process, from cremation to finished stone takes up to nine months. In this other possible world, as in all things, given enough time, an extrapolated logic set in. The bodies of people who died were no longer venerated, they simply became no longer practical or cost efficient, taking up too much valued real-estate; the dead outnumbered the living.

It began with the evisceration of graves en masse, destroying all those who died, creating new homes for those still alive. Eventually, death was barely even taken seriously anymore, and life was enjoyed much more, death became an afterthought to the joys that life could bring: what happened, happened because of fate, out of our hands, impossible to control. Live fast, die young. Eventually, people began to celebrate death. Feasts and celebrations of the dead took on new meaning. We became our own comestible, a rare delicacy served only on special occasions. Some took great pride in living gluttonous lives to be a delectable feast, to be able to have large celebrations, able to feed large amounts of the friends that they had accumulated and acquired in life in one final dinner in their honor.

There were no true repercussions, and for those of you wondering, there were no dead to walk the earth for revenge. The only time the dead rose was when the living over indulged upon their corpse, or had indigestion. Don’t you see what this world has become, when the living feast off the dead? When there’s no more room on earth, then the living will walk in hell, and the dead won’t have a prayer, because it’s the logic of the living.

Heat Kills

Beads of sweat roll down his forehead.

They say that sweating helps keep you cool, but when you’re chained up in the middle of a windless desert, it really doesn’t seem to help at all. Evaporation… it only leads to dehydration.

He can feel his skin burning and tightening under the blistering sun. He’s turning redder and redder, darker and darker every passing minute. Literally being cooked alive.

I struggled and strained all I could when I first awoke chained up to this floor, but it was no use, I was only speeding up the process, wearing myself out. The cuffs left me with blood covering my hands and wrists. I stopped bleeding soon after the sun rose. I hope that it dried out the wounds, instead of me being so dehydrated that the blood just couldn’t flow anymore.

Vultures circle overhead, preparing for a fine feast of flesh.

I wish I knew who did this to me, or why they did it. I can barely even think back to yesterday, when I was just another guy working at a 9 to 5, no real plans for the future yet. It wasn’t the best life, but it was pretty sweet, and I enjoyed it; hell, I was fuckin’ happy with it, ecstatic, and that’s all that counts, really, all that mattered to me.

The sun bears down on him with an untold force. Waves of heat continually pummeling him.

Now here I am, chained to a giant metal platform in the middle of the desert in the middle of the day; on my knees, waiting to die. I just don’t feel like moving anymore, I can’t, it’s just too damn hot. My brain doesn’t even feel like it’s functioning properly, it must have gone earlier, shut down, all in wait of the inevitable.

The sounds of pulsating heat play tricks on him, a high pitched drone.

I begin to imagine what will happen to me when I die. Will whoever put me out here come to reclaim my corpse, and cannibalize me? Maybe have a big picnic, I’ll be part of a celebration… Perhaps I’ll just be left out here forever, my bare bones basking and bleaching in the blistering boiling blaze. I hope it’s a case of mistaken identity, and they’ll soon realize their mistake, and come to get me, putting someone who deserves this out here in my stead. Could I be some sort of magical sacrifice, my bloodline leading up to this day, to appease some sort of sun god?
Heaven comes in the form of darkness. A shadow zone.

Clouds, amazing. I can see into the distance of this dead world. Nothing but cracked dirt, the dry crust of a burnt earth. It leads off into mountains. Other than that, nothing. I begin to get a good look at the steel platform I’m on. It’s curved. Doesn’t really look like steel here in the shade of the clouds. Can’t really tell what it’s made out of, it’s like nothing I’ve ever seen before. Will this really be the last thing I see?

He begins to feel droplets of water coming from the clouds overhead.

Yes! I can survive just a little bit longer, maybe someone will find me, save me. How good it will feel to drink water again.

He tilts his tired head towards the sky, opening his eyes to thank the heavens above, and mouth to drink of the liquid that comes from the sky to save his life.
No, no, this doesn’t taste right… those aren’t clouds… they’re… they’re…

The horrible and terrifying sight would be his last on this plane of existence.

Shoot ’em Dead

“Dammit, Ramirez! I want your badge, and your gun, on my desk: now!”
“Chief, listen-”
“No, you listen, Ramirez, I can’t have you running around like a god damn vigilante! Not on my watch, not on my force! I don’t know how they did things back where you came from, but here, we do things by the book!”
“I don’t read,” Ramirez said coldly, before walking out of the Chief’s office.
“Ramirez! Ramirez!” the Chief yelled after him, but to no avail.

I’d been making unauthorized busts. The Chief didn’t like it too much, but I didn’t let his bellyachin’ get to me, I was too close to care about a few stepped-on tails. Too close to finally busting Vidrio. These creeps I’d been catching were part of his battery of ghouls, and when you disconnect these types from their batteries, they lose power. I’ve been following him for years, and he’s finally slipped up, set up shop and made a new home for himself here. Juarez Vidrio, a high powered repeater that I’ve only seen in person once, when he killed my partner. There ain’t nothin’ on him in any of the books, and he’s gunna be all mine.

My contact said the info was located at a local strip joint. I take the Cruiser, roll up with no sirens. I enter the club, and it’s packed, a lot of spirit here. They respect the badge, though, and as long as I don’t cause any trouble, they leave me alone. I head straight for the back, to the performers. I don’t make it too far, not allowed in the back, especially how I look, it’d freak out the girls, she says; damn that banshee, the “manager”. No matter, I asked her about the girl I was looking for, and, as fate would have it, she was about on stage now. I head back out to the floor, and is she ever a vision; a lot of soul in how she moves. I signal her to come talk to me once she’s done her little apparition. I know the next girl on stage, seen her around, a real bloodsucker, I feel sorry for any guy that falls for this beauty of a vampire – doesn’t matter: not my jurisdiction. The other girl finally comes to talk, said her name was Etheria, I told her that I already knew, and needed some information on Vidrio. I could tell she knew much more than she wanted to say by the way her entire appearance faded; I could see right through her.

In no time at all, I had my answers. I can be very persuasive with the other side when I want to be. She told me exactly where his new haunt was. I go back to the station, drop off the Cruiser. I’m taking my civilian car for this. Finally, I’ll have my revenge, I’m not gunna call this one in; this will be my bust and my bust alone.

Piracy

“Yarrrrrrrrr,” said the pirate, counting doubloons.
“Yaaaaar,” said the captain, observing him carefully with his one eye, “Ye best count it well, y’ain’t the only one o’ me crew who can count, so don’t be thinkin’ fer a second that yee can pull a fast one on me, the great Captain Mayhem Paddock III, I’ll cut yer head clean off and feed it to the sharks.”
“aye aye, cap’m”

This is what I conceptualize to be a common dialogue on their ship, The Euphonia. It has been at sea for a few short weeks now, after a stop on land to pick up supplies, and to pirate the most precious jewels that this ship in particular seeks. This disembarkment had gone particularly well, and their findings continue to be enjoyed by all the crew aboard, and perhaps many of the accursed crowd they will encounter to pilfer from in the future. This crew does not plunder in the traditional sense, there are no reported murders, and no jewels, gold, or chastity are reported to have been taken unwillingly.

This ship, full of the vilest and most reprehensible riff-raff on the seven seas, pirates music. Murderers, rapists, and felons are nearly unheard of on this crew. These men all work together in a rum soaked ship to perform the most dastardly deeds the world has ever seen. They flow into town, and take in the local shows, orchestras, musicians, soloist virtuosos, minstrels, bards, and even yodelers; nothing is off limits to this pirate crew. They use special recording devices conceived by Captain Mayhem Paddock III himself, record the songs, and play them at future times for money and profit. Other times, this crew listens, remembers, and, taking instruments of their own, reperform the very same songs to others around the world. They truly are the most contemptible and underhanded of pirates.

The music that they abducted from the very air emanating from the original artist can now be heard around the world, for while these pirates are the best at what they do, and the most world-renowned, they are not alone in their depraved ways. There are other crews, who commit equally, if not worse atrocities upon the culture of mankind. These performances are no longer kept to a small and privileged few who can afford them, these pirates are spreading culture around as if it some sort of disease.

The Euphonia and Captain Mayhem Paddock III care not for culture or preserving neither the artist nor his managers, they only care to bring music across the seven seas, to those who have never heard it before, or anything like it. Those who have no right to listen to it, for they can neither afford it, nor do they deserve what is not native to their lands. They only see music as a means to join the world to their degenerate ways. I, Captain Reginald Ignatius Aapoiproire seek to bring every last one of these miscreants to justice. I have been tracking them for years, I cannot quit now without looking like a fool to my King and his entire court. I will see that the crew of the Euphonia hang for their crimes, especially that nigh-untraceable Captain Mayhem Paddock III. If only I could control or destroy him, could I see that this madness comes to an immediate end.

Of Honor and Composure

Cherry blossoms fall
Petals descend silently
He hears each last one

A nearby stream soothes
Over time rocks become smooth
By its persistence

Many souls congress
Living, breathing habitat
All in harmony

Insects buzz about
Dragonflies are most graceful
Landing upon reeds

Frogs croak at nothing
To hear themselves, they enjoy
Tonguing any prey

A sword remains sheathed
To expose the blade means death
For the opponent

Up above is blue
Though the sun will be setting
And colors will change

The meadow is green
Lush grass flows far into trees
A distant forest

Calming winds blow soft
Flowing through the scenery
Upon our hero

He sits in mediation
Upon a gentle hillside
His thoughts in focus

A grey kimono
A sign of nobility
From subdued colors

He is deep in thought
Quiet reflection of life
Of what he has learned

Mastery of martial arts
Skill with katana unmatched
A code of Honor

Surpassed his master
And then set out on his own
No more to learn there

Traveling alone
The way of the samurai
It is in his blood

For years he did train
One can never stop learning
Each day, new lessons

Mind is well above
The way that others would think
At one with the world

From the deepest well
Is where he draws capacity
Move beyond action

Sun begins to set
Divine color paints the sky
Breathtaking vision

He senses presence
Emerging from the forest
With sinister plans

A rival appears
To claim the life of this man
Focus singular

The dark to his light
He rushes with blade in hand
Intentions to kill

Light stands to defend
Withdrawing his katana
Swords clash, metals meet

Even in power
Their strength is but one aspect
A battle of skill

Wit vies with cunning
Steel meets steel again and again
Only one will win

Dark has no Honor
Does not abide by the code
An army for hire

No room for light
In the blackest dynasty
His blood must be spilt

An old samurai
That has gained too much repute
As a force of right

Their numbers, endless
He fights with all he has left
It is not enough

Many of theirs, dead
Dark assassin, among them
Light fought with Honor

Battlefield, silent
The sun has set, all is dark
Gentle stream runs red
